Was in Company 478 in 1956. I remember by first breakfast, grapes, cornbread and SOS. Our Company Commander was BMC Donnigan. Remember the fun of the grinder and the scrub brush fights? Went to Hospital Corps School and was sent to Camp Pendleton as a grunt corpsman. Best duty I ever had. If anybody remembers those days, e-mail me. I am still looking for a friend. He was a HM3 and his name was Cornelius Maurice Rutledge. If anybody knows him, please give him my address.

Looking for shipmates from Company 66-271. Makes me sad to see our navy heritage being auctioned off. Am interested in what has happened to North Chapel. It was a beautiful Chapel with the windows. Also would like to find out what is now the lives of the men I was in boot camp with. I don't think the "new" San Diego realizes what they have lost and are tearing down.

Was in Company 456 N.T.C. from 13 August 1958 until 16 October 1958. Company Commander was Eugene Re' BTC. Would love to talk with any mates from 456, particularily L.C. Popanz, Richard L. Pease, Gary G. Holly, Robert E. Kearney. I was Master at Arms in the beginning, but due to major dental problems, I had to step down as they were working on my teeth and I was in and out of the dental office contantly and could not perform all my duties, as such, Gary G. Holly was appointed Master at Arms until we graduated.

Most of the guys were super, however, as with life, there were a few butt heads, some that I think I still need to even the score with, but Hey!!!, what the heck, a lot of water under the keel by now.

Anyway, anyone from 456 drop me a line, okay.

Cliff et al:

Just wanted to say thanks for the outstanding presentation of "Honor, Courage, Commitment -- Navy Boot Camp". I just revisited your site for the first time in several weeks, and was delighted to see the book listed there. Work continues on "Chiefs--Backbone of the Navy", which ought to be in the publisher's hands before the end of the year. Thanks for all the help, and the outstanding site honoring the San Diego Navy -- makes me wish I weren't an old Atlantic Fleet guy!

I was thrilled to run across this site!! I was at RTC in 1961. Company 61-255. I lived 20 miles from Great Lakes but wanted to get further away from home, so San Diego it was. I was discharged in 1965 (EM2) and really never looked back or thought much about it, never contacted any friends I made. That was a mistake. About a year ago I ran across a web site of the last ship I was on and since that time I've been on a quest to try to remember as much as I could. I dug out "The Anchor" that I hadn't looked at in 20 years and forgot I had and it jogged my memory a little, but not a lot. I remember that for the first part of training we were at Camp Nimitz, but after a time we moved over to the other side of the bridge. How long we spent at Camp Nimitz I don't recall. I do remember that that seems to be where they seperated the guys out that just couldn't adjust to the Navy.I remember marching more than once by a snack shop that had like a screened-in porch. But we couldn't go in yet. I could hear the music playing inside and it was Dion singing "Run Around Sue" I was soooooo homesick. Eventually, I was able to go in there and pig out on candy. I also remember going to a movie that was in walking distance of the base on Rosecrans Blvd, I believe. Also, Thanksgiving of 1961 a buddy took me to his home somewhere in San Diego or close to San Diego and had dinner with his family. They were Italian and we had ravioli and pigged out on it, then they brought out the turkey. I wish I could remember his name!! After recruit training I went to EM School and Motion Picture School in San Diego, but at graduation, requested east coast. I ended up in Norfolk VA on the USS Earle B Hall (APD-107), then the USS Chesterfield County (LST 551) and finally the USS Fremont (APA-44). I made a couple Caribbean cruises and one Med Cruise. My Navy life was influential on whatever sucesses in life I've had. And, life has been good. Just wish I would have kept up with some of the guys. Again, thanks for the site. I'll return often.

My husband was Theodore S. Johnson. He finished his basic training 13 Oct., 1948, and was in Company 411. He retired 1 Nov., 1968, as BM1. He was a hard hat diver; a member of UDT #5; and served most of his 20 years on amphibious ships. His last tour was with MCB #6 in Vietnam Oct. 1967 to March, 1968. Ted passed away April 30, 2001. He always loved the Navy.

I am hoping someone can help me locate the proper agency to contact in order to purchase a replacement copy of the yearbook or annual from the USS Enterprise tour of duty which ended in April 1983 in San Francisco. They grounded in the harbor on the return. My friend has lost his copy over the years and I would like to surprise him with another one if possible. I have been trying forever and hope maybe someone out there would know where I need to go or who I need to talk to. Thanks so much for any suggestions. Jennifer

I WANT TO SAY WE WERE COMPANY #32 OR 352, MEMORY IS FOGGY ON THAT ONE.MOST OF THE GUYS WERE FROM THE SOUTH, AND A FEW OF US FROM CALIF. COMPANY COMMANDERS NAME WAS R.T. CONNERS GM1. LAST SAW HIM IN VERY BAD CONDITION ABOUT 2300 HOURS @ FLEET LANDING IN SUBIC BAY, NEVER SEEN AGAIN.BIG TIME DRINKER, BLESS HIS HEART. AFTER BOOT CAMP MY FIRST DUTY STATION WAS ABOARD THE USS DIXIE AD14 FOR OJT AS SIGNALMAN WITH 6 OTHER HANDS IN DEC 1954. TRANSFERED TO THE PIEDMONT AD17 WITH FLAG AND CONTINUED OJT. WAS ASSIGNED TO PIEDMONTS SHIPS COMPANY AFTER TRAINING. WENT OVER THE POND EARLY 1955. RETURNED TO DIEGO AND THEN TO BREMERTON WA. FOR YARD PERIOD.AFTER A YEAR IN 56 WAS TRANSFERED TO USS ST. PAUL CA73 IN LONG BEACH CA.MADE ANOTHER WESTPAC CRUISE.DURING THIS CRUISE WE WERE ONE OF AMERICAS REPS TO PRESIDENT RAMON MAGSAYSAY FUNERAL IN MANILA. OF COURSE OUR PORTS OF CALL WERE SUBIC, HONG KONG, YOKOSUKA, KEELUNG KAOSHUNG PEARL AND LOTS OF AREAS SURROUNDED BY H2O, AND LOTS OF IT.OPERATION BEACON HILL WAS A LARGE PART OF THIS CRUISE. UPON MY RETURN TO LONG BEACH IN MARCH 57,WAS TRANSFERED TO THE USS RUPERTUS WHERE I SERVED ABOARD AS SIGNALMAN 3RD UNTILL JULY 58.THIS 3RD CRUISE HAD A GREAT ITENERARY, FIRST TO PEARL, THEN PAGO PAGO ON TO BRISBANE AUSTRIALIA, TO MANUS ISLAND FOR REFUELING TO SUBIC FROMOSIAN PATROLS NORTH AND SOUTH. HONG KNOG MIDWAY YOKOSUKA AND A LOVELY SPOT AT SEA BY THE NAME SAGAMI WAN WHERE WE FROZE TO DEATH @ WAY BELOW ZERO TEMPS. DURING THIS CRUISE THE RUPE EXPERENCED THE WORST TYPHOON I HAD EXOERENCE. HAD SEA WATER FLUSHING AROUND MY FEET ALL NIGHT. GOOD THING I WAS YOUNG AND INVENCABLE. SOMEHOW SOME WAY I HOPE THAT SOMEONE WILL SEE THIS AND RESPOND WITH INFO THAT WILL HELP TO JAR MY MEMORIE BANKS. I AM PUTTING TOGETHER INFORMATION TO DO A BOOK OF MY LIFE FOR MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. Boot Camp at NTC, San Diego, Company 933, August-Oct 75, TMC Nentwig. He told us we'd never forget his name as long as we lived, and I sure haven't. Also did BE&E School at NTC, then FT "A" School at Great Lakes, then 3+ years on USS Little Rock and USS Albany in Gaeta, Italy-- great duty!!

I visited NTC a few weeks ago-- sad to see it now, but a great history and much will be preserved.

In boot camp I remember doing pushups on my bare knuckles one afternoon for about 30 minutes for lacing my boot leggings the wrong way. The deterrent theory of punishment the navy used made a lasting impression on me and made me a better person.
